Elf Hat Headband

Elf Hat Headband

A pointy elf hat mounted on a headband transforms any child into one of Santa's helpers. Children make and wear these throughout December for plays, parties, and general Christmas magic.

What You'll Need

  • Green and red felt or cardstock — for the hat cone
  • Plain headband — plastic or fabric
  • White pompom — for the hat tip
  • Jingle bell — optional, for extra holiday cheer
  • Glue gun (adult use)
  • Star or holly stickers — for decoration

How to Do It

Step 1: Make the hat cone. Roll green or red felt into a cone shape and glue the seam. Trim the base so it's flat.

Step 2: Decorate. Add stickers or a strip of red felt as a brim.

Step 3: Add the pompom. Glue a white pompom (and optional jingle bell) to the tip.

Step 4: Attach to headband. Using hot glue (adult only), attach the hat base firmly to the top of the headband.

Step 5: Wear! Put on and ring in the Christmas spirit!

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Cone geometry — Rolling flat material into a cone is a practical geometry experience.

Costume creativity — Accessories transform identity — a core dramatic play experience.

Tips & Variations

  • Add a jingle bell to the tip instead of a pompom for extra music.
  • Make matching elf shoes by stuffing green socks with newspaper and curling the toes up.

My Two Cents

The headband attachment is the only step that truly needs a hot glue gun — everything else can be assembled with regular glue or tape. Set up a hot glue station and batch all the headband attachments together while children decorate the cone separately.
