Easter Egg Marble Painting

Easter Egg Marble Painting

Marble painting is a classic process art technique that produces beautiful, swirling, unpredictable results — and Easter egg-shaped paper is the perfect canvas. Drop marbles dipped in different colors into a box, tilt and roll, and watch abstract masterpieces emerge.

The best part about marble painting is that no two results are ever alike. Every egg is a one-of-a-kind work of art, making it perfect for classroom gifting and display.

What You'll Need

  • Easter egg-shaped paper — cut from cardstock, or traced and cut by children
  • Shallow box or tray with raised sides — a shoebox lid works perfectly
  • Marbles — 3–5 per session
  • Tempera paint — 3–4 Easter colors: pink, purple, yellow, turquoise
  • Plastic spoons — for dipping marbles in paint
  • Paper towel — for cleanup

How to Do It

Step 1: Prepare the paper. Cut egg shapes from white cardstock and place one inside the shoebox lid.

Step 2: Dip the marbles. Use a spoon to dip marbles in different paint colors.

Step 3: Place and tilt. Put 3–4 painted marbles on the paper. Hold the box with both hands and tilt side to side, rolling the marbles across the egg.

Step 4: Observe the trails. Watch the marble tracks create swirling color patterns across the egg!

Step 5: Remove and dry. Remove the egg with tongs or spoon and set on a drying rack. Start again with fresh paper!

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Process over product — This activity has no "right" result — it's all about the process.

Physics exploration — Rolling marbles and predicting their paths is a gravity and motion lesson.

Color mixing observation — Watching where colors overlap and blend develops color awareness.

Tips & Variations

  • Try with golf balls for bigger, bolder tracks.
  • Use shades of one color family for an elegant monochromatic result.
  • Cut the eggs extra large for more dramatic results.
  • Mount finished eggs on a branch display for a beautiful Easter tree.

My Two Cents

The key is not too much paint on each marble — a thin coat gives more control than a thick glob. I also recommend doing this on a low table so children can really see the action as they tilt. The squeals of "it's mixing! it's making orange!" when colors blend are some of the best sounds in early childhood education.
