Decorated Coffee Mug (Ceramic Markers)

Decorated Coffee Mug (Ceramic Markers)

A plain white mug decorated by a child with ceramic markers and baked in the oven becomes a dishwasher-safe keepsake that a coffee- or tea-loving parent uses every morning. This is one of the most practical and lasting gifts in the Father's Day repertoire.

What You'll Need

  • Plain white ceramic mug — the thicker, the better; dollar store mugs work well
  • Ceramic paint markers — oil-based, oven-bake style (Pebeo Porcelaine or similar)
  • Oven — for baking the finished mug
  • Newspaper — to protect the table during decorating

How to Do It

Step 1: Clean the mug. Wipe the mug with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils. Let dry.

Step 2: Draw the design. Children draw freely on the mug with ceramic markers: their name, a portrait of dad, "Best Dad," stars, hearts, favorite sports team design.

Step 3: Let dry. Allow the design to air dry for at least 1 hour.

Step 4: Bake. Place the mug in a COLD oven. Heat to 350°F and bake for 30 minutes. Let cool completely in the oven.

Step 5: Present! The decoration is now fully set and dishwasher-safe on the top rack.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Drawing on curved surfaces — Working on a 3D surface rather than flat paper is a new spatial challenge.

Process understanding — Learning that heat sets the paint is an introduction to materials science.

Tips & Variations

  • Reserve the bottom 1 inch of the mug from decorating — anything below the glaze line doesn't set well.
  • Add a bag of coffee or tea as a complete gift package.
  • Do a thumbprint design for the simplest, sweetest result.

My Two Cents

Ceramic markers are the key purchase — regular paint won't survive the dishwasher. Don't skip the alcohol-cleaning step or the decoration will peel. The baking step is genuinely exciting for children: "The oven will make your drawing permanent!"
