Decorate Cardboard Crowns: Royal Craft for Preschoolers

A cardboard crown hits a rare intersection: it is a craft and a prop simultaneously. Once the crown is decorated, it goes straight onto a child's head and transforms them into a king, queen, or dragon ruler. The decorating itself requires careful placement of gems and stickers, pressing beads into glue, and painting intricate patterns — excellent fine motor work wrapped in pure play motivation.

What You'll Need

  • Pre-cut crown shapes from cereal boxes or poster board (zigzag top edge)
  • Gold and silver paint
  • Self-adhesive craft gems or rhinestones
  • Glitter glue
  • Stickers, foam shapes, feathers
  • Stapler or tape to join the ends around a child's head

Decorating Ideas

  • Paint the whole crown gold, let dry, then add gems and glitter patterns.
  • Use each point of the crown as a different color section.
  • Add the child's initial in the center with sticker letters or paint.
  • Press foam stars along the band of the crown.

Dramatic Play Extension

After crowns are made, extend into dramatic play: Who is the ruler? What kingdom do they govern? What are the kingdom's rules? This open-ended imaginative extension develops language, narrative, and social skills far beyond the craft itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make the crown fit different head sizes?

Cut the crown band slightly too long, decorate it, then measure around the child's head and staple or tape to the correct size at the back. Alternatively, cut the band to the average preschool head circumference (approximately 50–52 cm) and add a strip at the back that can be adjusted with tape. Measure head circumference loosely — the crown should sit comfortably without being tight.
