PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
A cardboard crown hits a rare intersection: it is a craft and a prop simultaneously. Once the crown is decorated, it goes straight onto a child's head and transforms them into a king, queen, or dragon ruler. The decorating itself requires careful placement of gems and stickers, pressing beads into glue, and painting intricate patterns — excellent fine motor work wrapped in pure play motivation.
After crowns are made, extend into dramatic play: Who is the ruler? What kingdom do they govern? What are the kingdom's rules? This open-ended imaginative extension develops language, narrative, and social skills far beyond the craft itself.
Cut the crown band slightly too long, decorate it, then measure around the child's head and staple or tape to the correct size at the back. Alternatively, cut the band to the average preschool head circumference (approximately 50–52 cm) and add a strip at the back that can be adjusted with tape. Measure head circumference loosely — the crown should sit comfortably without being tight.
