On Arbor Day, celebrate trees by making a mosaic tree using torn paper in every shade of green, brown, and gold. The mosaic technique — covering a shape with small bits of material — produces a textured, rich image that honors the complexity and beauty of trees.
Step 1: Draw the tree. Lightly draw a tree outline on the base — broad canopy, thick trunk.
Step 2: Tear paper. Tear all the papers into small irregular pieces.
Step 3: Fill the canopy. Brush glue onto a section of the canopy and apply green, yellow, and gold torn paper pieces, overlapping slightly.
Step 4: Fill the trunk. Apply brown pieces to the trunk.
Step 5: Seal. Brush a final layer of diluted glue over the whole mosaic.
Nature reverence — Creating art about trees builds appreciation and environmental connection.
Mosaic composition — Covering a form with small pieces is a patience-building, meditative art technique.
This is a beautiful activity to pair with a tree-planting ceremony. Children make their mosaic tree, then go outside and plant a real one — the symbolic and the actual together make for a deeply meaningful Arbor Day experience.
