My Truck Is Stuck is a story about two dogs who are hauling a truck full of dog bones through the desert. Along the way, their truck gets stuck in a big hole.
As vehicles (each progressively larger than the previous) of dogs comes along, the dump-truck-driving dogs plead for help to get their truck unstuck. Although they all stop to try to help, none are successful. Finally one of the dump-truck-driving dogs calls for a tow truck. When the tow truck driver arrives, he pulls the truck free.
While all of this "heft-and-hauling" is going on, gophers are stealing the bones from the back of the dump truck! By the time the dump truck is freed from the hole and begin again on their way to "deliver their great big load", the dump truck is empty! The very first thing I noticed about My Truck Is Stuck is the unbelievable illustrations. The notations on the inside cover state that the artwork for My Truck Is Stuck was "prepared using oil paint over sand and modeling paste on masonite". Beautifully done!
My Truck Is Stuck is a rhyming book, with comical illustrations and story. Not only is the book entertaining and fun to read, but it is also educational. As each vehicle comes along and attaches itself to the stuck dump truck, the story indicates how many vehicles are now pulling the dump truck. My Truck Is Stuck encourages helping others and sharing (of your dog bones!).
My son and I give My Truck Is Stuck four out of four bone-stealing gophers!Title: My Truck Is Stuck

Start with books about the child's existing interests β if they love trucks, find every truck book in the library. Read with physical engagement: let them turn pages, point to objects, make sound effects. Short books work better than long ones for reluctant readers. Reading in highly comfortable, cozy circumstances (snuggled together, with a special reading snack) creates positive association with books. Never force prolonged reading against clear resistance β a 2-minute positive experience beats a 10-minute battle. Most children become enthusiastic book-lovers given sustained positive exposure over months.
Absolutely β repeated reading of favorite books is both normal and highly beneficial. With each reading, children understand more: they catch details they missed, connect the story to new experiences, and increasingly delight in predicting what happens next. The request to re-read is a sign of deep engagement, not a cognitive limitation. Never replace a requested re-read with a book you've chosen β follow the child's reading lead. Boredom with a book you've read 30 times doesn't mean the child is bored.
