Helpful Tips for Parents

  • Weather should rarely be a reason to cancel outdoor adventure. Appropriate clothing for rain, cold, wind, and heat removes the weather-as-obstacle framework that keeps families indoors unnecessarily.
  • Try micro-adventures — a backyard campout, a creek walk 5 minutes from home, a sunrise picnic in the park. The adventure mindset requires no special destination.
  • Community parks, botanical gardens, and nature preserves offer adventure infrastructure for free or low cost. A family with park access has everything needed for meaningful outdoor adventure.
  • Nighttime outdoor experiences (stargazing, firefly watching, listening to nocturnal sounds) open a completely different perceptual world that children rarely access and remember vividly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manage safety while still allowing adventure?

The goal is managed risk, not eliminated risk. Children who are never allowed to experience manageable physical risk — climbing, scrambling, jumping, exploring slightly out of sight — fail to develop the risk-assessment and physical confidence skills that keep them safe in the long run. Assess actual risk versus perceived risk: a 4-year-old climbing a 3-foot boulder is perceive as risky but is typically manageable; a 4-year-old near moving traffic is actually risky. Manage the genuinely high risks while allowing the growth-promoting managed risks.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

  • 🤸 Gross Motor Development — Moving through varied natural terrain — uneven paths, rocks, roots, mud, water — challenges the gross motor system in ways that flat manicured surfaces cannot, developing exceptional balance, coordination, and proprioception.
  • 🤝 Social Bonds — Shared outdoor adventures create lasting memories and strengthen relationships — the social bonds formed through challenging experiences together are among the most resilient and meaningful human connections.
  • 🔄 Adaptability & Flexibility — When an outdoor plan changes due to weather, terrain, or unexpected discovery, children practice the flexible thinking and adjustment to changed circumstances that life consistently requires.
  • 🌿 Nature Literacy — Learning to identify plants, animals, tracks, and natural features connects children to the living world — building ecological knowledge and the environmental literacy that informed citizenship requires.

Quinault Rainforest, Washington

Located in the western part of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, the Quinault Rainforest is a perfect preschool adventure location year-round. It is exotic and out-of-the-way enough for your preschooler to feel like she is on a really big adventure, and yet it offers all the amenities and activities necessary to keep your preschooler comfortable and entertained.

What to See

The scenery alone is worth the trip! Lake Quinault is gorgeous, surrounded by a large, grassy beach where your preschooler can run around to his heart's content. The temperate rainforest is populated by gigantic trees and teeming with wildlife. Your preschooler can expect to encounter Roosevelt Elk and Bald Eagles! But if record-setting sights are what you're looking for, then look no further than the Valley of the Giants. The Quinault River Valley is home to 6 champion conifers, including the largest Mountain Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce in the world! The Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce are easily accessible, located close to accommodations, on trails that a preschooler can manage comfortably.

What to Do

Hike

The Quinault Rainforest is a great place to hike, even for little legs. The Quinault Loop Trail, Lakeshore Trail, and Falls Creek Loop Trail are just a few trails that preschoolers can handle comfortably.

Boat

In good weather, Lake Quinault is a great place to boat. You can rent a kayak, canoe or paddle boat at the Quinault Lodge -- the staff there is very accommdating of preschoolers.

Take a Rainforest Safari

For a chance to get your preschooler as close as possible to the rainforest, go on a safari! Suitable for older preschoolers, these guided tours can be joined at three pickup locations throughout the Quinault area.

Drive

If you want to experience the Quinault Rainforest with your preschooler but prefer the convenience of driving in your own car, try the Quinault Loop Drive. A 31-mile loop around the lake and into the Olympic National Park, the drive offers ample opportunity to spot wildlife and see magnificent scenery.

Where to Stay

The Quinault Area has a variety of family-friendly accommodation options. If you're on a modest budget, try the Rainforest Resort Village ; it is ideally located, close to both the lake and a variety of trails suitable for preschoolers. The Resort Village also offers access to a convenience store and laundromat. If you're looking to splurge a little, go for the Lake Quinault Lodge . The building is incredibly picturesque, with inn-style rooms, fireplaces and panoramic views of the lake. Located across the street from the Quinault Mercantile, the Lodge is minutes away from rainforest trails and has a large back yard that leads down to Lake Quinault.

How to Get There

The Quinault Rainforest is accessible via US 101. It is an approximate 3-hour drive from Seattle.
