Water Painting Fences: Preschool Outdoor Art and Gross Motor Activity

Water painting fences is one of the most sustainable outdoor activities possible: it requires nothing but water, a large paintbrush or roller, and a surface. Children paint elaborate murals on fences, sidewalks, and walls — and the sun gradually erases everything, providing a fresh canvas in minutes. The large sweeping brushstrokes build gross motor shoulder control; the temporary nature of the art removes any performance anxiety about making mistakes. It's pure, uninhibited creative expression.

What You'll Need

  • Large paintbrushes or rollers (the bigger, the better)
  • A bucket of water
  • A fence, sidewalk, exterior wall, or patio surface
  • Optional: food coloring in the water for a subtle color effect

Creative Extensions

  • Letter practice: Write letters and words in water — they "disappear" so there's no pressure.
  • Shape challenge: Paint specific shapes as large as possible.
  • Mural: Paint a collaborative scene — everyone paints different elements (sky, tree, house, sun).
  • Time and observe: "How long does it take for the sun to erase our painting? Let's time it."
  • Shadow play: Paint around your shadow outline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does water painting appeal to so many children?

Water painting combines the satisfaction of making visible marks with the total safety of a medium that leaves no permanent evidence. Children who are hesitant about art (afraid of "doing it wrong") find water painting liberating. The physical scale — using a large brush on a large surface — also matches the natural scale of preschoolers' gross motor movements better than a small brush on paper. The temporary nature uniquely allows for risk-taking, correction, and repetition.
