Travel Agency Dramatic Play: Geography and Literacy for Preschoolers

A travel agency dramatic play center introduces children to the concept that the world is large, full of different places, and worth exploring. Children design brochures for imaginary destinations, book trips for customers, and plan what to pack — activities that naturally incorporate geography awareness, reading, writing, and the kind of organizational thinking that underlies planning and sequencing.

Travel Agency Setup

  • Travel brochures: real ones from a travel agent, or child-made ones with drawings and prices
  • Booking forms: blank templates with fields for destination, dates, and traveler names
  • Play passports: folded paper booklets with a photo page and stamp pages
  • A world map or globe for destination selection
  • Play money and a cash register
  • Luggage: a small rolling suitcase for packing role-play

Geography Integration

  • Ask children to point to destinations on a globe before booking them
  • Research a destination together: "What do people eat in Italy? What does Japan look like?"
  • Make a new stamp for the passport from each "destination"

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can children engage with world geography?

Children as young as 3 can engage with simplified geography through globes, picture books about world places, and dramatic play like travel agencies. They may not memorize country names, but they develop the schema that places are different, the world is big, and different people have different foods, homes, and languages — foundational multicultural awareness that informs global citizenship. Concrete globe interaction and world picture books support this learning more effectively than worksheets or memorization.
