π Skills Your Child Will Develop
ποΈ Fine Motor Skills β Manipulating small objects, tools, and materials during hands-on activities builds the hand strength and finger dexterity children need for writing and self-care.
π Emotional Self-Regulation β Managing the feelings that arise during activities β frustration when something doesn't work, excitement, disappointment at the end β builds the self-regulation foundation that distinguishes emotionally ready kindergarteners.
π§ Executive Function β Planning an activity, following multi-step directions, and seeing a project through to completion builds the executive function skills β working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control β that are the strongest predictors of school success.
𧩠Problem Solving β Working through a challenge β figuring out how pieces fit, how to balance a stack, or how to make something work β develops the perseverance and logical reasoning skills children use across every learning domain.
When children reach a certain age, they need to start learning responsibilities and looking after some of the things they do. This preschool activity allows your child to start making choices about doing chores and a reward system that goes with it.
Blank Word Strips
Markers
Fun stickers
Empty cabinet doors or wall at child's level
Step 1: Tape two word strips together and write your child's name on it (i.e. Jack's Responsibilities). Stick on wall or door.
Step 2: Come with four responsibilities your child is expected to do on a daily basis. For instance, pick up dirty clothes, put dishes in sink, pick up toys, keep bedroom clean, etc.
Step 3: Print each responsibility out on a word strip and stick on wall or door.
Step 4: Stick a blank word strip below each written one for stickers.
Step 5: Every night before bed, go over the list with your child. For each chore s/he completes, give them a sticker. Decide with your child what/if reward will be given once word strip is filled with stickers.
What Makes A Great Preschool Activity
A great preschool activity is one that stands out from others. It is how much time the child spends on it, what the outcome of the activity will be and if he/she has fun doing it and wants to do it again and again.
Time To Get Dressed One of the issues a lot of parents deal with on a daily basis is getting preschoolers dressed and out the door. Well, if you have some extra time to commit, make getting dressed a fun activity that will allow your child some freedom to get dressed on his or her own, but also fall within the parents' guidelines of getting out of the house on time. Making Mealtime Fun Getting your preschooler to sit in one spot and eat a healthy, nutritious meal can be quite cumbersome at times. But by making mealtime a fun activity, your preschooler may be more apt to stay seated and finish his or her meal in a timely manner. Goodnight, Dear Child Creating a good routine for bedtime is not only important for a preschooler's good night sleep, but also for you. Have some fun and out of the ordinary when you put your preschooler to bed tonight. I'm Mary Beth P. Adomaitis, the Preschool Activities writer and associate editor for Preschoolrock.com.
