Rainbow Ribbon Dancing

Rainbow Ribbon Dancing

Rainbow ribbon wands transform any open space into a dance studio, and St. Patrick's Day is the perfect excuse to make a full rainbow set. Children help assemble the wands, then use them for free-form dancing, guided movement games, and making rainbow arcs in the air. The ribbons catch light beautifully and the movement is full-body — exactly what preschoolers need after a morning of sitting crafts.

What You'll Need

  • Ribbon in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple — about 1 yard of each color per wand
  • Wooden dowel or popsicle stick — one per child
  • Tape, stapler, or hot glue gun — to attach ribbons
  • Optional: small jingle bell — to thread onto the ribbon end

How to Do It

Step 1: Cut the ribbons. Cut each ribbon color to about 36 inches. Longer ribbons are more dramatic; shorter ones are easier for younger children to control.

Step 2: Attach the ribbons. Gather all six ribbon colors together and secure them to one end of the dowel. Tape is the fastest method; hot glue is the most permanent. Wrap the attachment point with a contrasting ribbon for a clean, finished look.

Step 3: Warm up together. Start with simple movements: swing the wand up and down slowly, then faster. Move in a circle. Cross arms in front. Follow your body.

Step 4: Play rainbow follow-the-leader. The adult calls a movement and children copy: "Make a rainbow arc over your head. Swirl the ribbons low near the ground. Make the biggest circle you can."

Step 5: Free dance. Put on music — anything with a clear beat — and let children move however feels right. Watch how different the movements become when children are directing themselves.

Step 6: Guided shape challenges. Call out shapes for children to trace in the air with their ribbons: a circle, a zigzag, a figure eight.

Skills Your Child Will Develop

Gross motor coordination — Full-arm ribbon movements develop shoulder and core strength.

Spatial awareness — Moving through space with a wand requires awareness of other bodies and objects.

Rhythm and music response — Moving to a beat builds auditory processing and timing.

Creative expression — Free ribbon dancing is one of the most joyful forms of movement play.

Tips & Variations

  • Tie a small bell to the end of each ribbon so the dancing has a sound component.
  • Use the wands for a freeze-dance game: ribbons stop when the music stops.
  • Take the dancing outside for a rainbow outdoor play experience.
  • Match the ribbon colors to the rainbow paper chain for a coordinated St. Patrick's Day decor and movement activity.

My Two Cents

Do this outside when possible — interior spaces with low ceilings and furniture make ribbon dancing feel cramped and lead to knocks and tangles. A backyard, driveway, or park gives the full sweeping effect that makes this activity unforgettable.
