Pasta Lacing Necklaces: Fine Motor Jewelry Making for Preschoolers

Pasta lacing necklaces have been a preschool favorite for generations because they satisfy so many developmental needs at once: fine motor practice through threading, creative expression through color and pattern, and the deep satisfaction of making something wearable. Dyeing the pasta first adds a sensory science component, and the finished necklace is a genuine keepsake.

Dyeing the Pasta (Optional but Wonderful)

  1. Place dried pasta (penne, rigatoni, or large shells) in a zip-lock bag.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring and a splash of rubbing alcohol.
  3. Seal and shake until coated, then spread on newspaper to dry (30 minutes).
  4. Make several colors for pattern choices.

Threading the Necklace

  1. Cut yarn to necklace length plus 15cm extra.
  2. Wrap one end with tape to create a stiff "needle" tip.
  3. Tie a large knot or a pasta piece at the other end as a stopper.
  4. Thread pasta onto yarn: penne is easiest, rigatoni a bit trickier, small shell shapes most challenging.
  5. Create patterns: 2 red, 1 yellow, 2 red, 1 yellow.
  6. Tie the ends together when complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pasta shapes work best for lacing?

Penne and rigatoni are the easiest starting shapes — their wide, smooth holes thread easily. Ziti is similar but narrower. Wagon wheel pasta (rotelle) adds variety. Small shells and bowties are more challenging and suitable for older children. Avoid very small pasta shapes for young children. Dried pasta is safe for children who are past the mouthing stage.
