π Skills Your Child Will Develop
π¬ Language Development β Narrating play, hearing new vocabulary, and describing what they're doing dramatically expands children's language range and the sentence complexity they'll bring to reading and conversation.
𧩠Problem Solving β Working through a challenge β figuring out how pieces fit, how to balance a stack, or how to make something work β develops the perseverance and logical reasoning skills children use across every learning domain.
π― Focus & Attention β Sustaining engagement with an activity long enough to complete it builds the voluntary attention control that children need for listening in class, reading, and all forms of academic learning.
π Spatial Reasoning β Thinking about how objects relate in space β fitting shapes together, building structures, filling containers β develops the spatial intelligence that predicts success in mathematics and STEM fields.
This cute little frame is a good way for your preschooler to learn to follow directions in order to make something easy and fun. This activity will need a little help from Mom, Dad or another adult, but the outcome will be a wonderful framed sewing art that is perfect for a holiday or birthday gift.
A piece of cardboard cut to a 6 1/2" square
A piece of fabric from sewing projects or worn out clothes cut into a 6 1/2" square
Lightweight yarn
Dritz's plastic sewing needles
Safety scissors
Elmer's school glue
Pencil or other marking pen
Four six-inch natural wood or colored craft sticks
Step 1: Have the adult print the child's name or other name on the piece of fabric.
Step 2: After the plastic sewing needle is threaded, have your preschooler sew over the traced letters on the fabric. Help your child tie knots after each letter.
Step 3: Glue the back of the fabric to the cardboard. Let dry for about 30 minutes.
Step 4: Glue the craft sticks around the edges of the cardboard to create a framed look.
With glue, add colorful buttons, sequins, lace, etc. to the frame for a more decorative look.
The plastic sewing needles, craft sticks and yarn can be found at any sewing supply store or arts and crafts store.
Just give your preschooler a stack of craft sticks and see what they do. Watch your child spell his or her name, make a house or other creation in the middle of your living room floor or kitchen table.
Sewing Spool Thread Towers
Everyone has some colorful spools of thread hanging around their house somewhere. So why not put them to good use -- besides sewing. Even if you do sew as a hobby or by trade, keeping your preschooler occupied with the spools of thread while you are sewing will not only help you get a project done, but keep your preschooler busy for a few minutes.
Sewing Mini-Pillows
Do you like to sew but need an activity to keep your preschool busy so you can finish a project? Then have them make mini-pillows with your leftover fabric. It's easy, time-consuming and can lead to other sewing or imaginative activities for your preschooler. Artwork Sewing Card Instead of throwing away some of the artwork your preschooler brings home from school (because we all know you can't save everything), try reusing the picture by creating a wonderful sewing card. It will be a good activity to do over and over again.
