Lucky Gold Coin Dig

Lucky Gold Coin Dig

Hide plastic gold coins in a tray of sand, kinetic sand, or even coffee grounds, and let children dig to find the leprechaun's hidden treasure! This archeological-style sensory activity combines the thrill of discovery with the pleasure of digging and sifting.

It's a wonderful small-group or individual activity that can last 20–30 minutes as children dig systematically (or chaotically!) through the medium searching for every last coin.

What You'll Need

  • Plastic gold coins — from a dollar store or party supply shop
  • Sand, kinetic sand, or coffee grounds — the digging medium
  • A shallow tray or bin — about the size of a baking sheet
  • Small shovels, spoons, or trowels — child-sized tools
  • Sifter or strainer — optional, for extra fun
  • Optional: small shamrocks or gems — to hide alongside coins

How to Do It

Step 1: Bury the treasure. While children are out of sight, bury gold coins throughout the tray of sand at different depths.

Step 2: Set up the tools. Place shovels and a sifter beside the tray.

Step 3: Send in the treasure hunters! Let children dig and sift freely. No guidance needed — the discovery is the whole point.

Step 4: Count the haul. When all coins are found, count them together.

Step 5: Bury and repeat. Kids almost always want to re-hide the coins for a friend or for themselves.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Sensory exploration — Digging in sand provides rich tactile input.

Spatial reasoning — Understanding depth — "dig deeper!" — is a spatial concept.

Counting — Counting the found coins connects the activity to number sense.

Tips & Variations

  • Add a "treasure map" with simple X marks showing approximately where coins are hidden.
  • Use kinetic sand for a more cohesive, mess-controlled experience.
  • Freeze coins in a block of green ice for a leprechaun ice excavation.
  • Write numbers on the coins for a number recognition version.

My Two Cents

Coffee grounds make an surprisingly wonderful digging medium — the smell is pleasant, it clumps slightly so coins stay buried, and cleanup is easy. Just spread a tablecloth under the tray and funnel the grounds back in when done. I've also used shredded green paper (Easter basket filler) for a no-mess version that's brilliant for indoor use.
