A play post office is one of the most literacy-rich dramatic play scenarios available to preschoolers. Every aspect involves print: addressing envelopes, writing (or scribbling) letters, reading addresses, sorting mail by recipient. In an age when children rarely receive or send physical mail, the post office scenario introduces a communication tradition that remains culturally significant — and the idea of writing a letter specifically for one person to read is deeply motivating for most preschoolers.
Actually send a letter written during play to a real recipient — a grandparent, a friend, a family member who lives elsewhere. Buy real stamps together. Walk to the mailbox to mail it. Receive a reply. This closing of the loop (pretend play → real action → real response) is profoundly meaningful and reinforces both the literacy skills practiced in play and the broader understanding that writing is a real form of communication. Even one real exchange makes the entire post office play scenario more meaningful.
