Doctor's office dramatic play is one of the most valuable forms of pretend play for young children because it helps them process real medical experiences — shots, checkups, waiting rooms — in a safe, controlled context where they have agency. Children who play "doctor" are using play to understand and master experiences that may feel frightening or confusing in real life. The medical vocabulary, sequencing of a checkup, and caretaking behaviors all develop meaningfully through repeated doctor play.
Yes — research consistently shows that medical play reduces procedural anxiety in young children. By playing the role of doctor (in control), patient (processing), and worried parent (perspective-taking), children work through the emotional content of medical visits at their own pace. Many pediatric hospitals actively encourage and provide toys for medical play in waiting rooms for exactly this reason. If your child has an upcoming procedure, playing "doctor's office" beforehand is one of the most effective preparation strategies available.
