Most preschoolers are excited by the idea of sleeping over at a friend’s house, but separation anxiety, potty-training issues, etc., might interfere with them actually sleeping over. Why not host an Almost Sleepover for your preschooler. This preschool activitiy is all the fun of sleeping over without actually sleeping over.
Choose an evening when your preschooler doesn’t have to get up early the next day to host your Almost Sleepover Preschool Activity, and limit the number of guests to four or five to keep activities and socializing running smoothly. Of course, there’s a dress code for this preschool activity. Instruct preschoolers to come dressed in their favorite pajamas and slippers with sleeping bags and pillows in tow.
Pajama Fashion Show. A pajama fashion show is a must. Throw some Kid’s Bop on the CD player and give each guest the chance to strut their stuff. And don’t forget to take lots of photos!
Decorate Pillow Cases. Since the traditional pillow fight might be a little too much for mom and dad, why not decorate pillow cases. Purchase some inexpensive, white pillow cases and fabric markers. With a fabric marker, write each preschooler’s name in large letters in the middle of the pillowcase and then let them decorate their pillow case with the markers however they choose.
Watch Movies and Eat Popcorn. Top off your Almost Sleepover Preschool Activity by watching a DVD snuggled up in sleeping bags on the family room floor. Some great movie ideas are Finding Nemo, the original Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and Happy Feet!
Your almost sleepover preschool activity wouldn’t be complete without some yummy slumber party snacks. Pizza, popcorn, movie-size boxes of candy and a make-your-own-sundae bar are sure to delight. Smores are another sleepover favorite! Think you need a campfire to enjoy the delicious taste of gooey smores? Think again.

Graham Crackers
Large Marshmallows
Milk Chocolate Bars, broken in half

Short attention span for activities is developmentally normal in preschoolers and shortens further when activities are too easy or too difficult. The sweet spot is a challenge that requires real effort but is achievable. Also consider time of day β activities attempted during tired or hungry periods have dramatically shorter engagement windows. After-nap or mid-morning are typically the richest activity windows.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting screen-based media to 1 hour per day of high-quality, co-viewed content for children aged 2β5, and avoiding screens except video-calling for children under 2. The quality of content and whether a parent is watching and discussing together matters enormously β passive, commercial, or violent screen content has negative effects; educational co-viewed content has minimal harm. Screens are not a substitute for the physical, social, and creative activities that develop preschool brains.
